You're standing in the candle aisle and the price tags stop making sense. The 8-ounce jar with the soy-wax label and the wood wick costs $26. The identical-looking one two shelves over costs $8. Same size, same "soy," same "hand-poured." You've bought both. This is what the $18 gap actually buys, what it doesn't, and the 60-second test that separates a real premium candle from an expensive cheap one.

What the $26 Is Actually Paying For

A 227 g premium scented candle, made by a small-batch shop that actually runs the numbers, costs roughly this much in raw materials before labor, rent, or packaging:

The raw material and labor delta is about $5.15. The rest of the gap is retail margin and rent — normal commerce. The $5 delta is the interesting question, because it's the part that should show up on the table in front of you.

The Three Things the Delta Actually Buys

1. Fragrance: 10% of a real blend, not 6% of a cheap one

Standard soy wax takes 6% to 8% fragrance by weight; coconut-soy and rapeseed blends can take 10% cleanly. Here's the part nobody prints on the label: a 6% load of perfume-grade oil and a 10% load of commodity oil often smell about the same in the first hour, then diverge. Perfume-grade oil is blended with top/middle/base notes that vaporize in sequence over the burn. That's why the premium candle still smells like the thing you bought on burn forty, and the cheap one is just "something was here" by burn twelve. 10% of a $6/lb oil is 10% of $0.15 per candle. 10% of a $60/lb oil is 10% of $1.50. Same label, ten times the material.

2. Wick calibration — the thing you never see

Brass-core cotton is the workhorse wick in premium scented candles because the core holds the melt pool open to the walls. A pure-cotton wick on the same wax in the same glass tunnels — a clean hole in the middle, 40% of your wax left on the edges. Calibrated means the shop ran a burn test, watched the melt pool hit the glass, and recorded the result against that specific wax, that fragrance blend, and that vessel diameter. If your premium candle tunnels after three burns, the wick wasn't calibrated. You paid the markup for a cheap process.

3. Vessel thickness and heat tolerance

A 2 mm glass jar is the wrong jar for a 40-hour coconut-soy candle. The glass warps, the melt pool collapses into the center, and the top of the wax stays solid while the bottom burns out. A 4 mm wall or a ceramic vessel holds edge heat long enough for the pool to expand — which matters exactly when you're burning past 4 hours, the whole point of buying the bigger candle.

The Three Things the Delta Does Not Buy

It doesn't burn longer. Burn time is wax density, vessel diameter, and wick draw. 227 g of soy burns 35–45 hours whether it costs $8 or $26. A 300 g jar burns longer because it's heavier, not because it's "luxury."

It doesn't burn hotter. Premium wax runs a cleaner flame — less soot — but roughly the same heat output as an equal-size paraffin candle.

It doesn't smell bigger. Scent throw is fragrance load, oil quality, wick draw, and airflow — not the word "luxury." A 10%-load candle in a 40 m² room with a draft does nothing. Buy for the room you're actually using it in.

The 60-Second Test Before You Buy

Check 1: Is the fragrance load verifiable? If the label doesn't state the wax weight, you can't verify the load at all. 227 g jar, 10% load = 22.7 g of oil. A shop that can't tell you the wax weight isn't running the numbers.

Check 2: Does the burn-time claim match the wax weight? 227 g ≈ 35–45 hours, 170 g ≈ 25–35 hours. A 170 g jar claiming "60 hours" is either a low-density paraffin blend that will tunnel hard, or marketing.

Check 3: Is the wick type stated and appropriate for the wax? Coconut-soy → brass-core cotton. Pure paraffin → single cotton is fine. If the label says "natural wick" with no specifics, push for the type — it's the one spec that's cheap to state and hard to fake.

Pass all three and the price is probably doing what it says. Fail two or more and the markup is a branding exercise.

Bottom Line

Neither candle is the "correct" candle. The correct candle is the one where you can see what you're paying for, in the numbers, on the label, before you've paid it. If you'd rather skip the burn entirely — no wick math, no melt pool, no fade — the same cost logic applies to LED candles: the premium is a better driver, 2700 K warm white, and a flicker algorithm that doesn't look like a screen.
